Iliescu was also cleared of accusations in a file regarding the Revolution of 1989, because of illegalities committed by the former head of the Military Prosecutor’s Office, Dan Voinea.

Criminal investigation was terminated in the case of Ion Iliescu, Virgil Magureanu (former head o the Romanian Intelligence Service), Mihai Citac (former Interior minister), Victor Athanase Stanculescu (former Defense minister), as well as four other officials at the time of the riots.

Prosecutors stated the acts fall under the statute of limitations.
