The monsignor, who turns 102 on May 27, welcomed the two Romanians in his home and afterwards saw them leaving but without knowing they were not leaving empty handed. Among the goods they stole was a Cross offered to the monsignor by Pope John Paul II.
Due to his age, the monsignor’s relatives decided not to tell him about the robbery.
The incident was reported by the bishop’s nephew Antonio Mennonna, who discovered the robbery in September 2007.
“The first Romanian was presented to me by a priest in Civitavecchia. He was a young man, some 26 years of age. In July last year he told me of his departure and recommended another young Romanian man, who was in search of a job. I willingly received him and even lent him some money to buy a computer, shoes and other personal items. In September, before he left, he started asking me for certain objects and it was then that I discovered the robbery,” the bishop’s nephew said.
The police are currently searching the Morena area because all the addresses provided by the two Romanians were false.
