Over 80 Moldovan students in the Romanian central city of Brasov will protest Tuesday evening in the city’s central square.
"We’ve called on all Moldovan students, about 80-90 people, to protest tonight and those who care about Moldovans said they will come too. (…) Things are serious in Chisinau and we want to show our solidarity,” said Octavian Apostol, head of the Moldovan students’ organization in Brasov. He added students in Romania cannot remain indifferent to what is happening in the neighboring country.
"We will come to the square with candles, in sing of mourning for our future that has been buried by communists,” Apostol added.
Students in Brasov also want to leave Wednesday for the republic of Moldova to join protesters in Chisinau.
Moldovan students in the western Romanian city of Oradea also announced protests for Thursday evening.
About 30,000 people are protesting in Chisinau Tuesday, two days after a general election handed victory to the ruling communists of president Vladimir Voronin. Fifty people were injured so far, both demonstrators and security forces, the head doctor of the local emergency hospital said.
Protesters occupied the president’s office and police used tear gas and water jets to disperse the crowd. Demonstrators also smashed windows of the Parliament building, from where they hurled furniture out into the street and set it ablaze.
Security forces have blocked entrances into Chisinau to stop other people from joining the protests and the Moldovan opposition called for a fresh election.
