Romanian PM Turns To International Law On Bystroye Canal Matter
He said that Romania sees the Danube Delta as natural reservation and not economic resource.
The President of Ukraine, Viktor Yushchenko, said that the canal area is sovereign territory, here the Ukrainian state has the right to unfold sovereign activity, a position communicated to Romania.
In the talks held with Tăriceanu, Yushchenko said that Romania and Ukraine need to apply "special policy for a special area," for the Bystroye canal, and he expressed interest in cooperation for joint ecology and economy projects.
Tariceanu indicated that these projects need to be regulated through European norms and an opinion needs to be expressed by the courts.
"Today we are bearing the consequences of the communist regime, when the Delta was seen as economic resource," said Tariceanu, adding that Romania is making great efforts to protect the biodiversity in the Delta, measures including the prohibition of industrial fishing.
