Judge, businessmen held in Voicu corruption case, freed by High Court

Businessmen Marius Locic and Costel Casuneanu and former judge Florin Costiniu were released from custody on Monday night going into Tuesday after the High Court’s top nine-judge panel accepted their appeal to a previous detention order. After lengthy debates for hours on end, the High Court panel decided to cancel the 29-day remand measure for the three and replace it with a ban from leaving the city.

The three were initially placed on remand last week, facing charges related to acts of corruption in the case of Senator Catalin Voicu, who is currently on 30-day detention for influence peddling and taking bribes, in a high-level graft file that involves several politicians, businessmen, police and magistrates.
