Romania’s Government will limit the quantity of tobacco products and alcohol that can be sold to individuals in duty-free shops in order to reduce tax evasion and increase budget revenues.

The Romanian Senate’s committee for legal matters Tuesday endorsed a legal initiative whereby people who require medical attention over voluntary alcohol abuse would have to pay for the medical services.

Romanians plan to spend less on certain products in 2010 and the biggest spending cuts will target cigarettes, alcohol, clothes and electronic appliances, while food budgets will not be reduced, according to a survey conducted in February by market research company 360insights.
