Romania’s Senate adopted tacitly Wednesday an emergency decree regulating child-rearing benefits, which have been differentiated depending on the duration of maternity leave.

Romanian senators on Monday decided the payment of child-rearing benefits and state allowances for children will be made within 60 days since the submission of applications.

Romanian mothers will stage a protest Monday outside the Labor Ministry, involving babies in prams, diapers and black bands as symbols for the “funeral” set up by the lawmakers’ recently announced decision to cut child-rearing benefits, said a press release Thursday.

Romania’s Government will reduce child-rearing benefits starting June 1 and it will soon be decided whether the benefits will drop to a given percentage or a fixed sum, said Tuesday Andreea Paul-Vass, economic adviser to Prime Minister Emil Boc.
