Moldovan customs officers said they closed the border crossing at Sculeni, on Romania’s eastern border with the Republic of Moldova following anticommunist protests that degenerated into street fights Tuesday in the Moldovan capital Chisinau, Pro TV Chisinau reported.

Anticommunist protesters in the Moldovan capital of Chisinau occupied the building housing the president’s office, Deutsche Welle reported, adding ambulances have arrived near demonstrators.

Romania’s President Traian Basescu said Tuesday at the public television that he finds it hard to understand the policy of the Communist Party in Chisinau, but stressed that the aggressive gestures displayed by the Moldovan President, Prime Minister and foreign affairs minister will not change Romania’s stand toward the Republic of Moldova.

The press department of the Moldovan Presidency announced Tuesday that Romania’s Embassy to Chisinau should hold accurate information on the country where it unfolds its activity, following a press statement released by the embassy and published in Moldovan daily "Timpul."
