Romanian social democrat ministers in the center-left coalition government handed in their resignations Thursday after President Traian Basescu endorsed the democrat liberal prime minster’s decision to sack social democrat Deputy Prime Minister and Interior Minister Dan Nica.

Bogdan Niculescu Duvaz, spokesman for Romania’s ruling coalition Social Democratic Party, told unionists protesting at the party’s headquarters in Bucharest that they shouldn’t protest there because the party is leaving the government anyway.

Romanian social democrat leader Mircea Geoana said late Monday on the public television network TVR that he doesn’t exclude a different Parliament majority if he wins the presidential election in the fall.
