Romania's Government will create the National Competitiveness Council, whose task will be to develop a new economic strategy concerning competitiveness and to present reports on "the economic competitiveness dynamic" twice a year.

Some 45 Romanian companies in several sectors of activity will receive non-reimbursable financing worth a total 515.3 million lei (EUR1=RON4.2878) for investment projects, through the “Increase of Economic Competitiveness” sectoral operational program, the Economy Ministry said Monday.

Romania picked up four notches to 64 in a global competitiveness ranking released by the World Economic Forum on Tuesday.

Romania ranks 74th out of 131 countries in a global top of economic competitiveness for 2007-2008, but its score remains unchanged from 2006, with competitive drawbacks such as lack of transparency in government decisions and poor road infrastructure.
