Romania’s Justice Ministry sent the country’s top judicial watchdog CSM a draft emergency decree which amends the country's criminal codes, as well as temporarily enabling appeals for annulment in past cases judged by the Supreme Court’s five-judge panels, judicial sources told MEDIAFAX.

The chairman of Romania’s Senate, Calin Popescu Tariceanu, stated on Tuesday that the ruling coalition has not discussed an announced emergency decree on the country’s criminal codes, and declined to give an opinion on the subject until he receives more information.

Romanian Prime Minister Viorica Dancila announced on Monday that the Government will look into the opportunity of passing an emergency decree amending the country’s criminal codes with provisions declared constitutional from two previously rejected parliamentary bills.

Romanian Justice Minister Tudorel Toader stated on Friday that the draft project for amending the country’s criminal codes was made by the ministry “in accordance with Constitutional Court decisions and EU directives”, despite being deemed unconstitutional by the country’s Constitutional Court.
