Romanian authorities on Wednesday searched 20 homes of cyber crime suspects and detained 20 people to be questioned by organized crime prosecutors over a fraud of EUR500,000 de euro, people close to the investigation said.

Twenty-two people have been charged in the United States for cyber crimes following a law enforcement operation conducted by Romanian organized crime prosecutors, U.S. Ambassador to Bucharest Mark Gitenstein said Friday, adding the U.S. will try to have them extradited.

Romanian organized crime prosecutors are conducting 117 searches in capital Bucharest and several locations in southern and western Romania to apprehend cyber crime suspects who allegedly defrauded 1,000 people of about $20 million.

Twenty people suspected of bank fraud operations in Romania and the United States were arrested Monday morning following 36 raids in three Romanian counties.
