The petition concerning Romania's National Defense Strategy was rejected Thursday in the European Parliament's Committee on Petitions, after the members of four parties left the meeting, social democrat MEP Victor Bostinaru told MEDIAFAX.

The European Parliament’s Petitions Committee has declared admissible the petitions filed by the Romanian Democratic Union Confederation (CSDR) and Romanian Journalists’ Federation MediaSind to have an article picturing mass media as vulnerability eliminated from the country’s Defense Strategy.

Several Romanian politicians, journalists and artists set up a media right protection group, following President Traian Basescu’s decision to list the media among potential threats to the country’s national security, social democrat deputy Carmen Moldovan said in a press release Saturday.

Romania’s President Traian Basescu said Wednesday on the public radio that he maintains his standpoint regarding media campaigns that denigrate state institutions, which were listed among threats to national security in the country’s National Defense Strategy.

Romania’s National Defense Strategy, sent to the Parliament for debates and approval, states that Romania faces some weak points which affect the image of the country’s state institutions and hinder the enforcement of laws.

Romania’s Chamber of Deputies and Senate on Wednesday decided the report on the country’s National Defense Strategy will be drafted until September 1 and lawmakers will set off debates on the report in the Parliament's fall session.
