Cristian Popescu ‘Piedone’, mayor of district 4 of Romania’s capital city Bucharest, had his driving license suspended Monday by order of the prefect of Arges County, southern Romania, along other licenses involved in a major fraud case.

The Romanian Senate's committee for legal matters on Tuesday approved an amendment to Government Emergency Ordinance 9/2009 stipulating that, in fraud cases, driving licenses can be suspended only by courts, not by the issuing authority.

Three people, including an agent of the local driving license service, were detained in the case of fraudulent release of driving licenses and registrations of cars in Sfantu Gheorghe, central Romania, General Anticorruption Department (DGA) spokesperson Sarmizia Fetcu said Thursday.

Nineteen people are being investigated over the fraudulent release of driving licenses and registrations of cars in Sfantu Gheorghe, central Romania, following extensive searches Wednesday morning, the General Anticorruption Department (DGA) said.
