The Romanian government decided in Wednesday’s cabinet meeting to send a letter to the European Commission with an action plan to render the 112 emergency call service more efficient, assuring the EU the system would comply starting February 2008.

The European Commission has opened an infringement proceeding against Romania to ensure that the single European emergency call number 112 works, and has referred Poland and Latvia to the European Court of Justice, the Commission said Wednesday in a press release.

Romania granted no illegal state aid in the privatization of auto-assembly plant Automobile Craiova, and the delays in the European Commission’s investigation could get Ford to back out of the transaction, Senate chairman Nicolae Vacaroiu said Friday.
