Romanian Health Minister Ion Bazac said Saturday in a conference in the city of Pitesti that, at the moment, there are no cases of infection with the new flu virus in Romania, but that alertness must be maintained, because the danger of flu has not passed and the virus spreads very quickly.

A 21-year old Romanian man returning from Italy presented swine flu symptoms and was placed in quarantine, but the results of tests performed by the Cantacuzino Institute came back negative, according to doctor Adrian Streinu Cercel, who added there are no cases of swine flu in Romania.

Romania will receive, within 48 hours, reactives for a precise diagnosis in potential cases of infection with the AH1N1 virus, said Sunday health minister Ion Bazac, adding so far there have not been any cases of the swine flu.

Romanian health minister Ion Bazac said Romania has the capacity to treat 460,000 people with antiviral medication, and the stock, updated Sunday, is sufficient for the current situation, since there are no suspicions of swine flu cases in Romania.

Romanian authorities are taking stock of existing antiviral medicine as the swine flu pandemic seems increasingly probable, but the country’s response may be too weak compared to France’s, for example, which has enough doses for everybody.

The situation in Arad, where a young man is suspected to have the swine flu will not be analyzed by the "Cantacuzino" Institute in Bucharest, because the person involved does not come from an area with confirmed cases of the illness, said Ministry of Health official Adrian Streinu Cercel.
