Sebastian Oprescu, president of the Romanian National Union of Public Servants (SNFP), said Monday that he has filed a complaint with tax authority ANAF and, on Tuesday, will challenge in court ANAF head Sorin Blejnar's order to give 1063 employees prior notice of termination.

Romanian Interior Ministry employees included in the institution’s layoff plan will not receive severance pay as the country’s economic situation does not allow for such a measure, Interior Minister Traian Igas said Wednesday.

About 45,000 Romanian public administration employees Tuesday ceased work for two hours, starting 8.30 a.m., in protest over wage cuts and planned layoffs in the public sector.

Romanian President Traian Basescu on Thursday said on public radio RRA the Government should hurry and lay off many public servants working for the state apparatus, suggesting that 20% of them are “useless”.
