Tourists who choose to spend this weekend, starting with the Labor Day on Saturday, May 1, and also on Sunday, May 2, on the beaches of southeastern city port Constanta and Mamaia resort on Romania’s Black Sea Coast will be under the constant watch of 15 - 20 voluntary lifeguards.

Romania’s tourism minister Elena Udrea said Saturday in the Black Sea resort of Mamaia that the Tourism Ministry allocated funds needed to pay lifeguards’ salaries and to upgrade lifeguard towers and emergency medical care units on the beach.

Romanian lifeguards in the Black Sea resort of Mamaia will no longer attempt to rescue people in danger of drowning, as they have not received their pay from the Government, National Lifeguards’ Association vice-president Adrian Rapa said in a press conference on Wednesday.

Romanian lifeguards in the Black Sea resorts Eforie Nord and Eforie Sud are threatening to go on strike unless they receive their salaries for the past two months.

The Romanian government approved an additional 3.7 million lei (EUR1=RON3.5952) from budget reserves to pay for lifeguard services on the Romanian Black Sea coast.
