The Romanian Government will lend mayoralties up to 1.5 billion lei (EUR1=RON4.2322) in 2010, using privatization proceeds, which will allow mayoralties to pay debts due on December 31, 2009 to suppliers of public works and services.

Romania's Government on Wednesday said European Union funds worth EUR11 million, used as financial assistance for floods that occurred in 2008, were allocated to counties Suceava, Botosani, Neamt, Iasi and Maramures, in northern Romania, after the EC experts assessed flood-related damages.

Romanian deputy Prime Minister Dan Nica said Sunday that following talks with local public representatives resulted in the establishment of principles for the decentralization of public administration, including staff norms, which means a reduction in mayoralty staff numbers.

Romania’s President Traian Basescu on Sunday urged for decentralization of state institutions, saying Romanians are more inclined to trust local administration than the central one, as local officials only think about the wellbeing of the community.
