Many hotel operators in resorts on the valley of the Romanian river Prahova have reduced prices on their Christmas and New Year’s Eve packages compared to last year, but reservations are still at only half last year’s level in some places.

Romanian travel agencies cashed in slightly over EUR45 million from tourists who want to spend the New Year in Romanian resorts and foreign localities, the Federation of Tourism Employers’ Associations, or FPTR, said Sunday.

Romanian president Traian Basescu counted down the seconds into the new year together with people gathered in the square near the parliament and wished Romanians everywhere a happy new year.
