Romanian parents will picket the Government headquarters on May 26 and will stage protests in Iasi and Brasov displeased with the Executive’s plan to cut child-rearing and other social benefits granted to children, protesters’ representatives said in a press release Thursday.

Romania’s Labor Ministry has decided to cut 25% of the child-rearing benefit, currently standing at 85% of the parent’s average income for the previous year, starting June 1, Andreea Vass-Paul, economic adviser to Prime Minister Emil Boc, told MEDIAFAX Friday.

The Romanian National Federation of Parent Associations in High School Education (FNAP-IP) called on the teachers, Government and the Ministry of Education to find a way towards constructive dialogue, in view of solving all issues.

Romanian democrat liberal lawmaker, Mircea Toader, on Sunday said the country’s ruling coalition decided, it its meeting on Saturday evening, that schools will be run by a managing board, which will equally include parents, teachers and representatives of the local administration.

Parents neglecting their children should lose parental rights sooner and underage children should become eligible for adoption after the mother has been counseled, if she claims she cannot raise her child, Ileana Savu, state secretary with Romania’s authority for children’s rights said Wednesday.

Romania's Constitutional Court noted that eliminating natural parents from their children's adoption procedure is a flaw in the legal system and decided, citing the European Convention on adoptions, that natural parents must give their consent when completing the adoption procedures.
