Romania’s alliance between social democrats and conservatives obtained 33% of voters’ preferences for the Chamber of Deputies, followed by the Democratic Liberal Party with 32.57% and liberals with 18.32%, following the counting of votes in 92.73% of polling stations countrywide by GMT 1200.

Romanians citizens abroad will be able to vote in the November 30 parliamentary elections in 221 polling stations, while 620,000 ballots will be sent to foreign countries, spokesperson of the Foreign Affairs Ministry Cosmin Boiangiu said.

Romania’s former head of state, social democrat senator Ion Iliescu, said he will not run for senator in the upcoming parliament elections, saying he is not motivated to run in a uninominal constituency.

The national council of Romania’s Conservative Party, or PC, decided Tuesday to continue talks with leftist opposition social democrats (PSD) to form an alliance for parliament elections in the fall, party leader Daniela Popa said.

Romanian National Liberal Party vice presidents Teodor Melescanu and Norica Nicolai stated it is "almost impossible" for parliament elections to be organized at the same time as local elections, pointing out that there is not enough time for early parliament elections.

Romanian Prime Minister Calin Tariceanu restated Tuesday that local elections will not be moved up or postponed and will be organized at a date so as not to overlap with Easter or the European Football Championship.
