Romanian President Traian Basescu in a statement Saturday said the Romanian people and himself “join the mourning” of Polish President Lech Kaczynski and other Polish senior government officials killed in a plane crash in Russia earlier Saturday.

Romania’s opposition social democrat leader Victor Ponta on Saturday said the "death of Polish President Lech Kaczynski is a great loss not only for Poland, but also for the European Union."

Poland’s Ambassador to Romania, Wojciech Zajaczkowski, on Saturday said he is deeply moved by Romanians’ reaction to the tragic death of Polish President Lech Kaczynski and stressed that Romanian President Traian Basescu "personally expressed his deep sorrow."

Former Romanian President Ion Iliescu on Saturday expressed his deep condolences to the Polish people and the family of Polish President Lech Kaczynski who was killed in a plane crash in Russia early Saturday.
