Bucharest general mayor Sorin Oprescu Monday announced he will run for president in the election set for November 22.

Romania’s former social democrat prime minister Adrian Nastase said Sunday in a press conference that he is willing to run for president this year if the party appoints him as its candidate, but wouldn’t quit the party to run independently.

Romania liberal leaders agree that they need to nominate a presidential candidate as soon as possible, liberal vice-president Ludovic Orban said in a press conference Saturday, adding talk of a potential candidacy on his part is premature.

Romanian social democrat leader Mircea Geoana is considering running for president in the 2009 elections and will make a decision after March 15, when the party expects the results of an opinion poll, sources within the Social Democratic Party told MEDIAFAX Tuesday.
