Romania’s Government pledged to reduce the number of public employees to 1.29 million this year by laying off about 70,000 employees in the public sector, according to the country’s additional letter of intent to the EUR13 billion standby agreement with the International Monetary Fund.

Romania’s public sector will scrap 326,000 jobs and will have 1.068 million employees from the current 1.394 million by 2015, the deadline for the enforcement of the unitary pay law, finance minister Gheorghe Pogea said Tuesday.

A report drafted by the Romanian government indicates that the average monthly costs per person on public sector wages, during January-November 2008, range from 1693 lei (EUR1=RON4.2340) for the Economic and Social Council up to RON9926 for the Supreme Court, which ranks first in the hierarchy.
