Purchases made through projects financed from European Union non-reimbursable funds will be checked by the Department Coordinating and Verifying Public Purchases, regardless of their estimated value and the way they were assigned, says a draft emergency decree drawn up by the Finance Ministry.

RATB, the public transport authority in Romania’s capital Bucharest, will begin on January 11, 2010 the process to purchase 150 trolleybuses, in a contract worth an estimated EUR60 million, net of VAT.

Romanian public institutions and state-owned companies bought cars, laptops and furniture worth over EUR500 million in 2008, tenfold higher compared with total purchases of EUR50 million in 2007, and most contracts were signed with private suppliers during August-December 2008.

The head of the Romanian Police (IGPR), Gheorghe Popa, said that, at his request, DGA, DGIPI, DIF, and SRI informed that there are no suspicions regarding the contracts for the purchase of police cars.
