The recount of all voided ballots in Romania’s presidential election held last Sunday found 2,247 valid ballots, of which 1,260 for incumbent Traian Basescu and 987 for social democrat Mircea Geoana, Romania’s Central Electoral Bureau said Monday.

Romania’s Central Electoral Bureau has recounted voided ballots in 31 out of 41 counties and the capital and found among them 778 valid ballots for incumbent President Traian Basescu and 697 for social democrat Mircea Geoana, people close to the matter said Sunday.

Romania’s Central Electoral Bureau has halted the recount of ballots voided in Sunday’s presidential election runoff and will resume it Sunday morning, citing fatigue after its members spent all night counting.

A recount of ballots annulled in Romania’s presidential election runoff last Sunday has found a large number of valid votes for both contenders, social democrat representative in the Central Electoral Bureau Nicu Vasilescu told MEDIAFAX Saturday.

The Central Electoral Bureau rejected as groundless Wednesday the request of the Romanian Social Democratic Party to recount votes in polling stations where alleged irregularities occurred during presidential election, adding social democrats didn't say extacly which polling stations were concerned.

Moldovan president Vladimir Voronin asked the Constitution Court on Friday to order a new recount of the votes following parliamentary elections on Sunday which handed the victory to the incumbent communists and sparked violent protests, AFP reported.
