Romanian Prime Minister Calin Tariceanu and Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, agreed Thursday during the bilateral summit organized in Rome to initiate together actions aimed at the social integration of Rroma people, both on Romanian and Italian territory.

Four police officers of the mobile team in the Italian town Catanzaro, in the Calabria region, were attacked by some 300 ethnic Rroma when they tried to arrest one of them, Italian news agency Apcom reported.

The Italian government is willing to financially support people of Rroma origin who live in Italy if their children remain in Romania, said Francesco Bruzzone, secretary of “Lega Nord” (Northern League) party.

The integration process of foreigners in Italian society is “deficient”, as Italians grow more intolerant, particularly toward Romanians and Rromas, according to the 2007 report of the Italian socio-economic research institute Censis.

France has sped up collective expulsion procedures for Rroma people living in improvised barracks on the outskirts of Paris, in a move to finish the operations before the cold season, when the law forbids expulsions.
