The World Bank’s Board of Executive Directors on Thursday approved a EUR500 million loan to support a social assistance program of Romania’s government estimated at EUR5.5 billion.

Romanian Prime Minister Emil Boc said Tuesday that there are no current plans to adopt the law on social assistance by seeking a confidence vote in Parliament.

Romania’s social protection system is inefficient because it is cheated by thousands of people who take early retirement because they had tonsillectomies or appendectomies and are helped by “some very generous doctors”, Romanian President Traian Basescu said Tuesday.
