An English teacher attending an exchange program at a high school in the central Romanian city of Sibiu was diagnosed with the AH1N1 flu and was isolated under treatment.

The Romanian Government pushed back to December 31 the date for the first round of teaching staff salary increases, worth one third of the 28% hike decided by the former Cabinet.

Romanian Senate secretary Ivan Cismaru told MEDIAFAX Friday that, after publishing in the Official Gazette, the Government Ordinance postponing the increase of salaries in education will be analyzed by the Senate special committees, and the plenary vote will probably be cast on November 10.

Romanian Prime Minister Calin Tariceanu told the employees of a plant in central Romanian town Campina that he is not "so easily swayed" and the general strikes announced by unions in education do not scare him, adding that some of the union leaders in education are dishonest.

The law boosting Romanian teacher salaries by 50% was published Tuesday afternoon in the Official Gazette, a short while after the Executive announced a Government Emergency Ordinance postponing the application of the law until April 1, 2009.

Romanian Prime Minister Calin Tariceanu warned Romanians, Friday evening, on the intentions of parties that promote 50% salary hikes. He said the leaders of these parties will later implement higher taxes, in order to secure funding necessary for these salary increases.
