Cartel Alfa union leader Bogdan Hossu said Monday that unionists will begin protests next week and will urge the Government to extend the period of technical unemployment, as 200,000 employees are to be laid off starting February 1.

Romania’s freight division of the national railroad company CFR Marfa extended technical unemployment by three months and the activity of the division will not be disturbed, Gheorghe Popa, secretary of state with the Transport Ministry told MEDIAFAX Sunday.

Romanian car parts maker Mefin Sinaia (MEF.RO) extended the furlough period by 30 days, until August 31, for 89 employees, the company announced Wednesday.

Romanian cable producer Iproeb Bistrita (IPRU.RO) put 110 of its 556 employees on technical unemployment in July, citing lack of orders.

Nearly 900 employees of Romanian car parts maker Draexlmaier Hunedoara, of the 2,000 employees put on technical unemployment in December 2008, resumed work on January 6 and all employees will get back to work on January 12, union leader Marin Andreescu said Tuesday.
