Romania’s Government might adopt a normative act to amend Ordinance 1/2010 that forbids renewing collective labor contracts and eliminates negotiated wage bonuses, which led to wage reductions in the public sector.

Romanian union leaders told Prime Minister Emil Boc that the unitary wage law has been applied incorrectly, as teachers earning 800-900 lei (EUR1=RON4.0929) have had their salaries reduced, while judges and prosecutors “at the top of the pyramid,” enjoy pay rises.

About 500 Romanian unionists within National Union Confederation Cartel Alfa along with the State Employees' Alliance union will picket the Parliament Tuesday to urge the renegotiation of the unitary wage law for which the Government will assume responsibility.

The Romanian government will decide on the assumption of responsibility for a law pack, including the restructuring of government agencies, the education system, public sector wages and public spending cuts, in the meeting held Wednesday.

Romanian Prime Minister Emil Boc on Thursday said on the public radio he wants the Government to assume responsibility for the unitary wage law in the budget sector, the law on pensions and on education, adding the Constitution doesn’t limit such initiatives.

Romanian deputy prime minister Dan Nica said Wednesday after a meeting of the governing coalition that the single unitary law on wages in the public sector will keep a ratio of one to 15 between the minimum and maximum salary in the sector.
