The Romanian National Education Federation called on the Government Friday to seek ways for state budget savings without affecting the education sector, especially since prior measures to scrap over 19,000 jobs in the sector were deemed excessive.

The postponement of the decision regarding the unpaid leave for employees in the public sector will require additional measures so that the budget deficit be no higher than 7.3% of the GDP, as negotiated with the International Monetary Fund, Romanian Finance Minister Gheorghe Pogea said Wednesday.

Romanian President Traian Basescu said Thursday, in the southeastern county of Tulcea, that forcing public sector employees to take ten days off without pay is not the right solution and recommended staff cuts based on performance evaluations.
