The number of used cars brought to Romania from Germany decreased last year by 65.3%, one of the reasons being the German clunkers program, according to the German Federal Statistics Office.

Romanian owners of imported used cars who bought the vehicle before December 15, 2008, have 20 days to submit the literature needed to pay the car tax at the old value, before the tripling applied in December.

New car registrations dropped by 8.6% in Romania last year, to 285,504 units, while used car registrations grew by 151.4%, to a record level of 310,885 cars.

Massive imports of used cars could cost Romania budget revenues, jobs and could discourage foreign investment, said Tuesday Brent Valmar, vice-president of the Romanian automotive Manufacturers and Importers Association, or APIA.
