The "Bill and Melinda Gates" foundation will grant a $1.4 million financing within the "Global Libraries" program, to computerize 13 public libraries in five Romanian counties.
Bill Gates Foundation Aims To Computerize Romanian Libraries
The funds are non-reimbursable and the counties aimed are Ilfov, Hunedoara, Iasi, Salaj and Tulcea.
The announcement was made public on Tuesday during a press conference attended by minister of culture Adrian Iorgulescu, Janet Sawaya, representative with the “Bill and Melinda Gates” foundation , Martha Choe (program manager), representatives of the “Bill and Melinda Gates” foundation, Doina Popa the president of the Association of Librarians and Paul-Andre Baran, manager of the "Global Libraries" program for Romania.
For one year, the foundation’s representatives discussed with the managers of Romanian public libraries and the representatives of the Ministry of Culture about including the country in the "Global Libraries" program aiming to computerize libraries from European Union countries.
“Romania is one of the first countries to benefit from the results of the program,” Iorgulescu said.
Janet Sawaya, the foundation’s representative, said that the project aims to open a new world of knowledge and communication in Europe.
