The general manager of Romania’s national coal mining company CNH, Daniel Surulescu, said Monday that nine professional rescuers descended into the Petrila mine to assess the situation underground.

Surulescu had previously said a descent into the mine is being considered, but for the purpose of assessment, not to bring out the bodies of those who died in a blast Saturday.

A team of professional mine rescuers arrived Monday at noon at the Petrila mine, where two blasts claimed the lives of twelve people Saturday and injured another 14.
