Romania 4Q/09 Jobless Rate Rises To 7.5%

Romania's unemployment rate rose to 7.5% in the fourth quarter of 2009, up from 6.8% a quarter earlier and well above the 5.8% in the same period the year before, the National Statistics Institute said Wednesday.

It said 731,000 men and women were unemployed in the fourth quarter of 2009. Male unemployment rate was 8.1%, while female unemployment reached 6.7%.

Romania's total labor force in the last quarter of 2009 was estimated at 9.75 million people.

The figures are based on the definition recommended by the International Labor Organization (ILO).
