Romania Trade Deficit Widens to EUR4.46B in January-May

Romania's trade balance posted a deficit of EUR4.46 billion in January-May, EUR680 million higher than in the same period in 2016, the country's statistics board said Monday.

Imports grew 12% in January-May, to EUR30.28 billion, while exports grew at a lower rate, of 11.1%, totaling EUR25.8 billion.

Vehicles and other transport equipment made up 47.9% of Romania’s exports and 36.9% of its imports in the first five months of 2017, while other manufactured goods accounted for 33.7% of exports and 30.7% of imports.

The European Union remained Romania’s main trading partner in January-May 2017, being the source of 76% of the country’s imports and receiving 75.7% of its exports.

In May alone, imports grew 18% compared with May 2016, to EUR6.68 billion, while exports grew 19.3%, to EUR5.57 billion, resulting in a trade gap of EUR1.1 billion, the data showed.
