"This is an important term for Romania and I am honored," Borbely said, adding this year will be a difficult one for the commission.
The Commission on Sustainable Development is the U.N.'s main discussion forum on sustainable development issues and was established as a functional commission of the Economic and Social Council in 1992.
Since its creation, Romania has held a vice-chairman position between 2000 and 2001.
