Romanian Fourth Graders To Get Uterine Cancer Vaccine As Of Oct 1

 

“The Health Ministry is focusing on the screening tests for different types of cancer – colon and rectal cancer, genital and breast cancer. As of this fall we are starting the first uterine cancer screening tests within a multiannual program. Women aged 25 to 64 will be gradually invited to be part of the program, and in three years all women belonging to this age group will receive invitations. The program has already received the necessary funds for this year,” Nicolaescu said.

According to Nicolaescu, fourth grade girls will get vaccine against HPV (a virus associated with 96% of uterine cancer cases) starting this fall.

"It is for the first time in Romania when young girls get protection against this disease. Actually, we are among the few European countries to develop this program,” the health minister added.

Romania will gradually introduce, as of October 2008, programs involving screening tests for uterine, breast and colon cancer.

Statistically, Romania is first in Eastern Europe by deaths caused by uterine cancer and six Romanian women die of this illness every day. Moreover, 3,448 Romanian women are diagnosed with uterine cancer every year and 2,094 of them die. Also, Romanians with uterine cancer are younger than patients in the rest of the world.
