Romanian PM Urges Italian Authorities Not To Discriminate Against Romanians

Romanian Prime Minister Calin Tariceanu asked Italy’s ambassador to Bucharest to tell Italian authorities that Romania is concerned about Italy’s decision to fingerprint nomads across the country, adding the treatment is discriminatory and unacceptable.

"For the Romanian government, as well as all other European states, human rights are a priority. We cannot accept to have Romanian nationals subjected to discriminatory practices that are below human dignity,” Tariceanu said in the opening of Wednesday’s Cabinet meeting.

He asked the Foreign Affairs Ministry, the Interior Ministry and the Justice Ministry to intensify talks on the matter with the European Commission and Italian authorities.

Tariceanu also informed ministers about his meeting on Tuesday with Italian ambassador Daniele Mancini, whom he asked again to voice Romania’s concerns over Italy’s planned public safety measures.

The European Parliament asked Thursday the Italian authorities to refrain from collecting fingerprints of Roma people, and said that the integration of Roma people should be ensured at European level.
