Mircea Ivanescu, one of Romania’s most important contemporary poets, died Thursday in Sibiu, following a long and painful illness, the Cartea Romaneasca publishing house said. He was 80.

Romanian Poet, Translator Mircea Ivanescu Dies At 80

Ivanescu, also an essay writer and translator, was a pioneer of postmodernism in Central and Eastern Europe and fundamentally contributed to the recovery of narratives in Romanian poetry in the '60s and '70s.

With multiple poetry awards, Ivanescu was proposed in 1999 for a Nobel Prize for Literature, at the request of the Swedish Academy Nobel Committee.
