The principle of free movement in the European Union cannot be applies restrictively on ethnic criteria, Romanian President Traian Basescu said Thursday during a meeting with ambassadors of EU countries.

The president spoke about the Roma community saying the situation requires a European approach besides national efforts for social inclusion.

"At the same time, the principle of free movement cannot be applied restrictively on ethnic criteria," Basescu underscored.
