“We had an open talk. He (Basescu - e.n.) made several recommendations which will be taken into account. He made no objections to the position we want to adopt in the future. All will be enforced according to Italian and International regulations to do away with indecency in Roma camps. We want to ensure the rights of Roma underage population, regardless of all these offensive and false controversies,” Maroni said, cited by Italian daily La Repubblica.
According to the paper, Maroni also said that the Romanian prime minister’s reaction lacked true grounds. Tariceanu had asked Italy’s ambassador to Bucharest to tell Italian authorities that Romania is concerned about Italy’s decision to fingerprint nomads across the country, adding the treatment is discriminatory and unacceptable.
The Italian interior minister said that the measures adopted in immigrants’ camps are meant to increase security and to organize surveys in the Roma camps, and are not targeted against the Roma people, thus answering criticism coming from the Italian head of opposition, Walter Veltroni, who demanded the annulment of the ordinance allowing authorities to fingerprint Roma people in Italy.
