Romanian Woman Wins Action Against Romania Over Seized Jewelry

A court in Romanian northwestern city of Cluj on Monday ruled in favor of a woman who asked the authorities to return her 3,000 kilograms of golden jewelry seized during the communist regime.

The judges compelled Romania’s central bank BNR to give back the jewelry to Anna Varga.

Varga said the 3,000 kilograms of golden jewelry (mostly bracelets and rings), were abusively taken from her by the former communist militia between 1973 and 1979.
