În 2004, Rolling Stone şi-a publicat lista cu cele mai bune 500 de cântece din toate timpurile. Dar s-au schimbat multe din 2004. Pe atunci iPod-ul era relativ nou, iar Billie Eilish avea trei ani. Aşa că revista a decis să întocmească o nouă listă în septembrie 2021. Dacă versiunea din 2004 era dominată de rock şi soul, versiunea din 2021 conţine mai mult hip-hop, country modern, indie rock, pop latin, reggae şi R&B.
