European central banks mull taking on financial stability as an additional key task besides price stability, central bank governor Mugur Isarescu said Wednesday.

Speaking at a banking seminar, Isarescu said the inflation cannot be brought down without a solid banking system, which in turn presupposes financial stability.

"The argument is whether a central bank can function efficiently with two goals," Isarescu said. "The idea of adding financial stability to price stability can no longer be neglected."

However, intertwining the two goals is a difficult, long-lasting task, the central bank official concluded.
