The building was returned to its rightful owner after being nationalized during the communist regime. The ministry had preemption rights to buy the building, but it decided it would not exercise this right.
"I showed him the situation. Sorin Oprescu was already aware of the problem the Union of Plastic Artists was facing. I reminded him how city hall bought the building for the Romanian Theater Union after it had been returned to the previous owners, but EUR7 million is too large a sum. The culture ministry will not make a bid to buy the building, leaving the mayoralty to use the right to buy it”, Adrian Iorgulescu said.
He mentioned city hall is considering other alternatives to relocate the Union of Plastic Artists, as a place behind the Free Press House might be available.
The owner of the building at 21 Nicolae Iorga street requested EUR7 million for the building.
