Romanian incumbent president Traian Basescu said Thursday in the opening of the presidential runoff debate against social democrat contender Mircea Geoana that on December 6 Romanians have a choice between creating a modern society and going back in time.

He said the experience he gained in the first term as president of Romania has showed him that "on December 6 Romanians will be faced with a choice - either creating a modern society or going back in time, through the return of the social democrats at the presidency."
